MWA 2017 Spring Farm Tour Features Pearl River County

Experience and learn about several unique agricultural production farms in Mississippi by participating in the Mississippi Women for Agriculture’s Spring Farm Tour, set for May 20 in Pearl River County.

Members and guests will travel to Pearl River County to visit Red Gate Bison Ranch and Shroomdom, Inc., two farms who produce rare commodities in the state and work to put Mississippi agriculture and agritourism on the map.

The tour will begin at Red Gate Bison Ranch at 10 a.m. where owners Andre and Beth Toups and Michelle Roach will give a presentation on bison ranching and marketing bison products. The couple will then provide a tour of the operation. The Toups family has overcome challenges with creative solutions and determination to see their dreams come to fruition.

The ranch will serve lunch — featuring bison chili — to the tour. Following lunch, the Toups will conduct a workshop where guests will create a unique piece of jewelry using materials harvested from a bison.

After the lunch and workshop, Mississippi Women for Agriculture members and their guests will travel to Shroomdom, Inc. for an afternoon tour of the mushroom farm. Owners Tony and Leilani Rosenbaum will demonstrate how gourmet mushrooms are cultivated and harvested, as well as showcase the farms Slovenian beehive project. The 160 acre farm is listed as one of National Geographic’s United States geotourisim sites.

Following the tour of Shroomdom, Inc., the farm, along with Country Girls Creamery and Picayune Blueberry Farm, will serve refreshments that feature local products.

Both farms recommend visitors wear a long sleeve shirt, jeans and rain or hiking boots. Shroomdom, Inc. also encourages those allergic to beestings to bring an epi-pen as a precaution.

The total cost for the day will be $40 per person — $25 for the Red Gate Bison Ranch tour, lunch and craft and $15 for the Shroomdom, Inc. tour and refreshments. Each member and visitor will be required to pay the two farms separately on the day of the tour. RSVP to Sandra Alesich at 601-757-6216  by May 15 in order to reserve a spot for the day.

Red Gate Bison Ranch is located at 92 Bison Lane, Poplarville, Mississippi 39470. Shroomdom, Inc., is located at 23 Rosenbaum Drive, Poplarville, Mississippi 39470.
